Lee Hughes

Psychologist & PhD Candidate

My experience spans various clinical, residential, and educational settings, allowing me to understand and address the unique mental health needs of individuals across all life stages. I am currently completing my Advanced training in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), a brief therapeutic approach that is effective for most mental health concerns and in treating persistent psychological problems. Alongside this, I also have experience in several other treatment approaches, including Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (Mi-CBT), Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). My primary areas of interest in clinical practice include attachment issues, anxiety, low mood, difficulties with emotion regulation, relationship issues, substance abuse, as well as men's mental health.

If you're ready to take the next step in your mental health journey, I'm here to guide and support you. Let's work together to achieve your goals and pave the way for a brighter, more fulfilling future. Please feel free to reach out via email or phone if you would like more information on my practice or would like to organise a time for us to meet. Committed to lifelong learning, I continuously seek to advance both personally and professionally. Post-university, I joined the Clinical Registrar program to enhance my clinical skills and experience. The two-year Clinical Psychology Registrar Program is the final phase towards full endorsement, focusing on supervised practical experience to refine skills and ethical practice, with completion expected by mid-2024. In addition to this, I also completed a three-year Core Training program in ISTDP, a brief therapeutic approach that known for its efficiency in addressing a wide array of mental health issues, including chronic psychological conditions. With this foundational knowledge, I will begin Advanced ISTDP Training in 2024 to further develop my therapeutic skills.

Outside of clinical practice, I am in the process of earning my Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology, expected to be completed by early 2024. My research within this program examines the behaviours of pre-loading (also referred to as pre-gaming, pre-partying, and pre-drinking) and other substance use practices in nightlife settings. The primary focus of my research is to gain a better understanding of drug pre-loading and its related harms in these environments. Upon completion of my doctorate, I intend to stay involved in academia (to some capacity). My goal moving forward in this space will be to further explore and understand the processes that drive change in therapy.
